Despite all indications to the contrary, many of the most important Russian archives are open and are worth investigating.

The goal of this project is to illuminate archival sources and disseminate information about collections that are available (in-person and online) for the use of students and young experts in the field. Research based on original source materials is of paramount importance to moving the field of Russian studies forward.

Some highlights of this project include how to access critical archives such as RGANI, GARF, and the Foreign Ministry archives; tips on how to access archival material in regional archives that may be off-limits in Moscow; and how to access a variety of archival material online from the comfort of your own home or office.

“The Bridge: Connecting Past and Present Through Archival Research on Russia” is presented by the National Security Archive at George Washington University and the Monterey Initiative in Russian Studies at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. Carnegie Corporation of New York provided funding for this project.

“The Bridge” project grew out of the 2020 Monterey Summer Symposium on Russia, led by Professor Anna Vassilieva, director of the Monterey Initiative in Russian Studies (MIR) at MIIS. Patricia Moore Nicholas of the Carnegie Corporation of New York gave early impetus to the effort. Svetlana Savranskaya at the National Security Archive coordinated the recruitment of researchers and lecturers. Jarlath McGuckin of MIR, MIIS, coordinated and edited the video and digital resources for the project. Rinat Bikineyev of the National Security Archive produced the front-end graphics and web hosting.

Совместный проект Архива национальной безопасности Университета Джорджа Вашингтона и Аспирантуры российских исследований Института международных исследований Миддлбери в Монтерее.

Несмотря на все сложности отношений между США и Россией и часто встречающиеся представления о недоступности российских первоисточников, многие из наиболее важных российских архивов открыты и заслуживают изучения.

Цель этого проекта - осветить архивные источники и распространить информацию о коллекциях, которые доступны (при личном посещении или в Интернете) для использования студентами и молодыми специалистами по российской и советской истории ХХ века. Исследования, основанные на первоисточниках, имеют первостепенное значение для продвижения российских исследований. Лекции ведущих историков-участников проекта освещают вопросы доступа к центральным федеральным архивам, таким как РГАНИ, ГАРФ, АВПРФ и РГАСПИ; советы о том, как получить доступ к архивным материалам региональных архивов; и как получить доступ к разнообразным архивным материалам в Интернете.
