Artificial Intelligence & Emerging Technology
While there is currently no official U.S. government definition of artificial intelligence, the FY 2019 NDAA (cited in the CRS report, "Artificial Intelligence and National Security") offers the following definitions:
- An artificial system developed in computer software, physical hardware, or other context that solves tasks requiring human-like perception, cognition, planning, learning, communication, or physical action.
- Any artificial system that performs tasks under varying and unpredictable circumstances without significant human oversight, or that can learn from experience and improve performance when exposed to data sets.
Emerging technology generally refers to either a new technology, or the novel application or further development of an existing technology. Many emerging technologies have significant overlap with the cyber domain.
