t on 0 Mn_li Authoritymm Ambvg h vn THE DIRECTOR OF INTELLIGENCE AND RESEARCH WASHINGTON October 22 1979 MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD Subject Nuclear Event in the South Atlantic British DCM John Robinson called on me on Friday afternoon October 19 1979 to report that preliminary analysis of the acoustic tapes from Raratonga had provided negative results additional analysis will be conducted at head quarters but it was not anticipated that the results would be any differenty Robinson took the opportunity to stress once more the sensitivity of this question for HMG especially the impact which public disclosure might have on the Lancaster House talks on Rhodesia I said we were still in the process of reviewing all the evidence and had made no approaches to other govern ments beyond the Secretary s briefing at the Quadripartite dinner during the present UNGA session I indicated that we would consult further with the UK when our analyses were completed was William G Bowdler
