11 August 1945 Before news came last night of possible Japan surrender had intended writing to Lovett repeating my views toward invasion When the atomic bomb was first discussed with me 1n Washington I was not in favor of it just as I have never favored the destruction of cities as such with all inhabitants being killed It was pointed out to me however that the use of the atomic bomb would certainly- mean that an invasion would be unnecessary and that thousands or American lives would be saved The invasion is still planned in spite of this - and only the surrendering of the Japanese after attacks on their homeland by Air only will cancel the invasion Significant in the surrendering is the faot that though it was brought about by Air Power an airman is not to be represented at the peace conference - the sea and the ground will be represented 1 I 1 _ I
